Pollution is a comprehensive global phenomenon that began with human existence on Earth. Research into it is contemporary, as scientists and experts began to take interest after the causes of pollution intensified and its dangerous consequences—disasters and diseases threatening the social, economic, and civilizational foundations of life—became widespread. They realized that what has occurred is a result of the deadly effects of erroneous human practices. Today, every wrong action, whether in word or deed, causes a type of psychological or material pollution.
In its general and comprehensive sense, pollution is anything that makes human life and its environment turbid and unbalanced, both psychologically and materially. Therefore, all our life activities must be governed by a conscious mind that anticipates their outcomes and impacts. Humans must foresee the correct results of their actions in a way that aligns with the natural harmony that God (Glory be to Him) has instilled in the creation of this great universe. If a person carries out their activities in a manner consistent with the laws governing nature, their body, performance, and work will be sound, the environment around them will be healthy, and the essentials of life will be safe from the harm of their actions.
From this perspective, we must view the phenomenon of pollution holistically, considering both action and result. Every action has a cause, and causes have many psychological motives stemming from personal need. Fulfilling this need is done through actions that may result in harm or benefit to oneself and others. Here we recall the words of God Almighty in His Noble Book: 'And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it * And inspired it [with] its wickedness and its righteousness' (Surah Ash-Shams, verses 7-8).
