In the 19th century in China, within a province of the Hunan region, a young girl named 'Lily' at the tender age of seven forms a lifelong emotional bond with a companion of the same age. The companion, called 'Snow Flower', introduces herself to Lily by sending a silk fan on which she writes a poem in 'Nushu', a unique language invented by Chinese women to communicate secretly away from male dominance. Over the years, Lily and Snow Flower exchange messages on the fan and craft stories on handkerchiefs, stepping out of their isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and achievements. Together, they endure the suffering of foot binding, reflect on their arranged marriages, and share the solitude and joys of motherhood and its tribulations. They find solace in nurturing a connection that reanimates their spirits. However, a misunderstanding suddenly arises, threatening to destroy the deep friendship between them.
