In this book, Imam al-Baghawi al-Shafi'i compiled hadiths that he narrates with his own chain of transmission, clarifying which of the compilers of the Sunnah books—such as the two Sahihs and others—narrated them. He mentioned that he only included hadiths that were relied upon by the early masters of the field (the Salaf), omitting those they disregarded, such as inverted (maqlub), fabricated (mawdu'), and unknown (majhul) narrations, and those they unanimously agreed to abandon. He stated that he mostly followed established precedent, except in a few cases where a piece of evidence led him to interpret an ambiguous text, clarify a difficult issue, or favor one opinion over another. He began the book with the hadith, 'Actions are but by intentions,' followed by the book of Faith (Iman), then Knowledge ('Ilm), then Purity (Taharah), arranging the hadiths thematically. He provides judgments on the hadiths, explains their conditions and narrators, clarifies their vocabulary, and discusses the benefits and legal rulings derived from them, attributing opinions to their proponents.
