Since the dawn of creation, humans have been exposed to numerous risks that result in financial losses affecting their person, property, or financial liability. With continued economic and technological development, these risks have diversified, necessitating the search for new ways to manage them, either to prevent their occurrence, reduce their frequency, or mitigate the losses they cause. No matter what new methods humans devise to confront risks, scientific and technological progress always introduces new dangers that require individuals to find new ways to deal with them. Therefore, the study of risks and how to manage them has become a necessity in all developed and developing countries.
The concept of insurance—as the most important method of risk management—is based on protecting individuals and establishments from material losses resulting from the occurrence of an insured risk. Insurance operates on the principle of cooperation among a group exposed to the risk to compensate for the material losses affecting some of them. Thus, the study of insurance has become a societal necessity. The role of insurance companies is not limited to paying compensation to those who have experienced a loss; they now play a major role in risk management and selecting the most appropriate means to prevent these risks and reduce the resulting losses.
