This book addresses the phenomenon of renewal in modern Arabic poetry from the Arab Renaissance era to the present. It examines its connection, on one hand, to the artistic creative necessity of seeking the new, and on the other hand, to appropriation and the resulting harm to the creativity of renewal and the artistic function of poetry. The research theoretically, practically, and empirically observes some aspects of the damage that has affected modern Arabic poetry, both at the level of creation and reception.

The book is not limited to linking renewal in modern Arabic poetry to external appropriation, as seen in the attempt to imitate the Western poetic model. It goes further to explore the danger of internal appropriation, when the Arab poetic heritage with its timeless works becomes a backdrop that conceals the poet's image, strips them of creative potential, and imposes its conditions and standards. Thus, the book aims to investigate the various forms of appropriation that disrupt the true process of renewal, which should stem from a genuine aesthetic need that generates creative action. This is far from the trend of appeasing prevailing critical waves and also far from the trend of gratuitous modernization that empties this process of its primary goal: adding something new and useful to the literary and civilizational accumulation.

After observing the current state of Arab poetry, the book concludes by envisioning a possible future for the Arabic poem, one where it can achieve a humanistic universality without closing in on itself or being appropriated by foreign cultures in a way that harms its artistic and civilizational effectiveness.
