The author—a scholar, jurist, linguist, preacher, and ascetic—wrote this book in response to a question about the belief held by some innovators of affirming the apparent meanings of ambiguous verses related to the names and attributes of God Almighty, without interpreting them in a way that avoids suggestions of anthropomorphism and corporealism, and attributing this stance to the early Muslims (Salaf). He dedicated chapters to topics such as God's 'aboveness' (al-fawqiyyah), 'rising over' (al-istiwa), 'withness' (al-ma'iyyah), and the Isra and Mi'raj. He systematically surveys the relevant texts from the Quran and Sunnah, examines them linguistically, and provides numerous notes and considerations. This book is an important reference on the subject of ambiguous texts.
