Reforming Modernity: Ethics and the New Human in the Philosophy of Taha Abderrahmane

Taha Abderrahmane is considered one of the most prominent philosophers to emerge from the Islamic world. His works cover a wide range of fields, addressing topics related to linguistics, logic, existence, reason, humility, violence, materialism, faith, debate, dialogue, and even the philosophy of dress. However, despite the breadth of his interests, the thread that connects all aspects of his philosophy is an ethical one. Abderrahmane's project—in all its diverse dimensions and orientations—remains part of what we generally call "moral philosophy."

The book "Reforming Modernity" focuses specifically on this issue (ethics), as Abderrahmane weaves it into the fabric of his discursive engagement with the central problems under which modernity labors in both the "West" and the "Islamic lands." These are viewed not as geographical indicators, but primarily as epistemological formations. Accordingly, Dr. Wael Hallaq does not claim that this book encompasses all, or even most, of the dimensions of Abderrahmane's vast project. However, he hopes that what he discusses reveals the "central nerves" through which his system of thought operates. In other words, this book addresses the vital cells that make Abderrahmane's project what it is—cells whose internal composition, if altered, would make the project fundamentally different from what we know of it now. This also means that as Abderrahmane's project continues, we already have a vast intellectual fabric that can be recognized as a distinguished contribution to ethics, worthy of our attention and research.
