Today, more than ever, we need to reflect on art in general and the Arab visual experience and its adjacent creative forms in particular. This is achieved by interrogating the questions that have accompanied the works of Arab artists who, for over a century, have confronted the legitimacy of these arts and their permissibility within a society that has lived and continues to face the challenges of modernity on various levels. The easel painting, more than other forms of artistic creation, has been tested by the jurisprudential mindset, caught between the hammer of establishing roots and the anvil of searching for an aesthetic experience unique to Arabs, even as it intersects with global visual production.
