Arabic grammar is the study focused on the endings of words, encompassing rules for declension and construction, such as the judgments on word declension, signs of their declension, and contexts where these rules apply. In language, 'grammar' refers to intention or direction.

Initially, grammar involved studying declension, referring to word endings; the expansion of the Islamic state led to the mingling of Arabic speech with non-Arabic, introducing errors into the Arabic language. The science of grammar first appeared during the era of Imam Ali bin Abi Talib, when he directed Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali to establish grammar guidelines to consolidate and stabilize language rules, particularly concerning the Qur'an, making Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali the founder of grammar. Later scholars gradually built upon his work, such as Al-Farahidi, who developed prosody and the principles of morphological scales to discover the origins of words and identify foreign and irregular words in Arabic, and was followed by Sibawayh, who authored the first book compiling Arabic grammar rules, named "Al-Kitab," which remains a foundational reference for Arabic grammar to this day.
