One hardly settles into work in mental hospitals and begins to observe its residents closely before being particularly struck by a considerable number of them, whose behavior at first glance appears quite healthy and normal, and whose mental state does not reveal any of the specific signs that unmistakably indicate a mental disorder. When one looks beyond the walls of the hospital, one sees a large number of people of varying ages and social statuses, whose lives are not straightforward, do not progress towards maturity, and do not settle on a goal. They go through life in a random confusion, not knowing mature consequences, not bound by any social commitment, and remaining forever a destructive and harmful element to themselves and others. Rarely does anyone care to investigate their ailment, and even more rarely does anyone realize they have an ailment at all. They are sometimes classified among those with aggressive or problematic behavior, and at other times with those having innate criminal tendencies. If a researcher wants to find guidance in some of the obscurities of this problem, they will move—despite the abundance of what they find—from ambiguity to ambiguity; they will see confusion, vagueness, and disorder pervading this problem in its definition, its explanation, and its treatment, and indeed in everything related to it. This is the psychopathic condition, which some confuse with mental illness as it is known in its familiar, specific manifestations, while others consider it synonymous with criminal behavior in whatever form it appears. And some make it a title for corrupt upbringing, decay, deterioration, and the cheapening of values and moral principles.
