This book, "Mabadi' 'Ilm al-Hadith wa Usuluhu" (Principles of the Science of Hadith and its Fundamentals), is an introduction to the author's great work, "Fath al-Mulhim bi-Sharh Sahih Muslim." It follows the example of Imam Muslim in his book "Al-Sahih," which begins with an engaging introduction written with the most eloquent language, beautiful expression, and precise discussion.
In its opening, the author states: "These are beneficial and important chapters explaining the principles of the science of Hadith and its fundamentals, which are of great benefit and frequent use. I have selected them from the esteemed books of the scholars of this field... so that the reader may have insight into the topics of Hadith contained within this book—'Fath al-Mulhim'—including its texts (mutun) and chains of narration (asanid)..."
Among the book's merits is the author's attention to the Hanafi school of thought in many of the disputed issues, presenting their evidence. Another advantage is its combination of jurisprudential and Hadith-related discussions of the Sunnah. It covers Hadith topics concerning the chain of narration (isnad) as well as jurisprudential matters of ijtihad (independent legal reasoning), which elevate the one who masters them to the level of expertise in the science of ijtihad.
This book is beneficial for students of the foundational books of the Sunnah, such as the two Sahihs, the four Sunan, and other primary Hadith collections. In it, the author has combined the most significant topics of Hadith terminology (mustalah) with insightful discussions on ijtihad for understanding and applying the texts correctly. Herein lies its importance.
