Today, business administration is the lifeblood of society and all sectors of the national economy, extending beyond national borders to international business management. The focus of business administration is on managing the enterprise (business or economic establishment), regardless of its ownership nature—public, private, or mixed. An enterprise is an organization whose purpose is to provide goods and services to society to achieve economic (or material) returns from its operations, along with a set of other objectives. The economic return is what distinguishes it from other types of organizations.
Business administration can be studied through any of its three primary approaches, depending on the objective of the study. The first approach consists of the functions performed by a manager, regardless of their position in the organizational structure. These functions include: planning and decision-making, organizing, leadership and motivation, and controlling, according to the best consensus among researchers interested in this evolving functional approach. The second approach involves studying business administration based on the core activities of the enterprise, which are: operations, marketing, finance, and human resources. Research and development, and public relations activities have also been added to these core functions. The third approach addresses business administration according to the sector in which the enterprise operates. There are various and multiple sectoral administrations, including: agricultural management (farm management), industrial management, oil management, banking management, insurance management, and tourism and hotel management, and so on.
This book presents a study of management at the principles level, utilizing the first two approaches (manager's functions and enterprise's activities). The third approach, the specialized sectoral study, requires a more advanced scientific background, which the student will encounter in the coming years. The book's content is organized to cover the study requirements for departments of business administration, accounting, commercial accountant preparation, economics, statistics, tourism, and hotel management. It introduces the principles of management in general, and business administration in particular. Therefore, when the term 'organization' is used in the book's chapters and sections, it refers to management in its broad sense, while business administration emphasizes the use of the term 'enterprise'. Although the book is intended for the first year of university and institute studies in management specializations, it serves as a fundamental reference for managers in enterprises and organizations, regardless of their ownership or the economic sector they operate in.
