Praise be to Allah, who legislated for His servants what is for their well-being in this world and their happiness in the hereafter. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah... and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, who delivered the message, fulfilled the trust, advised the nation, and left it on a clear path, its night like its day, from which none deviate except the one who is doomed. O Allah, nothing is easy except what You have made easy, and You make grief easy if You will. O Allah, send Your prayers upon our master Muhammad, his family, and his companions, and whoever follows his call and strives in His cause until the Day of Judgment.

To proceed:

The subject of polygamy has occupied the minds of many people and continues to occupy numerous scholars and thinkers in the modern era. From their perspective, it is considered a problem that must be addressed, and they have differed on it:

1. One group went with the position that the default is the permissibility of polygamy as revealed in the scripture and practiced by the noble Companions and those who followed their path. This group sees the way of the predecessors (Salaf) regarding polygamy as the correct path. This opinion is represented by Imam Mahmud Shaltut and Imam Muhammad Abu Zahra, may Allah have mercy on them.
2. A second group of thinkers believes that 'it is the right of the ruler to absolutely prohibit polygamy or to restrict its permissibility with conditions,' as stated by Qasim Amin. His friend, Sheikh Muhammad Rashid Rida - a student of Imam Muhammad Abduh - also holds the view that 'the Imam may prevent polygamy if its harm becomes widespread and its corruptions multiply.'
3. A third group advocates for restricting polygamy. This opinion is represented by Imam Muhammad Abduh - may Allah have mercy on him - and his students as well, who believe that 'the permissibility of polygamy is a matter that is most severely restricted.'

The second and third groups - advocates of social and religious reform in Egypt - agree that polygamy is permissible only out of necessity. I will discuss this matter - Allah willing - through this research.
