Plato's Republic (The Ideal State). Indeed, we do not agree with Plato on all his theories, and we have published them on his responsibility. However, we are admirers, and more than admirers, of his system of thought, his open-mindedness, his precision in judgments, and the abundance of his eloquence and clarity. We share with him the general purpose of his work, which is "happiness," and the specific means to that end, which is "virtue." We agree with him that virtue is desired for its own sake and for its results, and that the individual is a miniature state while the state is a large body; that what brings happiness to the state also brings happiness to the individual; and that the perfect man—the ideal—is one whose reason governs his desires, whose passion is led by his wisdom, and who lives and dies in the service of the community.
