Plato's Republic - Al-Nafitha (The Ideal State). We do not necessarily agree with all of Plato's theories, and we publish them on his own authority. However, we are deeply impressed by his system of thought, his open-mindedness, his precision in judgment, and the richness of his eloquence and clarity. We share his general purpose in writing, which is "Happiness," and the specific means to that end, which is "Virtue." We agree with him that virtue is sought for its own sake and for its results. And that the individual is a state in miniature and the state is a large body, and what makes the state happy also makes the individual happy. The ideal person is one whose reason governs their desires, whose spirit is guided by wisdom, and who lives and dies in service to the community.
