The purpose of revising this book is to update the content and make it more relevant to the needs of today's users. Although the pedagogical structure established 20 years ago remains solid and sound, most of the examples were outdated. I have added techniques learned over more than 25 years of teaching and practice into this new edition.

Since the goal of this book is to teach pencil drawing, with all the detailed text and illustrations, it will serve its purpose well. The section on drawing with colored pencils was intentionally omitted because I strongly feel that the fundamentals of how to draw must first be learned with a simple pencil. Pencil drawing is very special because traditional drawing techniques often transcend technical performance and reach the artist's mind and soul. For me, this is the only way to learn and master drawing with a pencil.

Drawing with a pencil is the foundation for all other drawing media, where pencil drawing skills become the cornerstone for a good artist. There are many digital artists who can draw, but my aim is to teach you *how* to draw, so this book can serve as an inspiration for painters and artists.
