This is the latest edition of the Jordanian Penal Code - The General Section, updated according to the most recent amendments under Amending Law No. 86 of 2001.

The amendment affected the following articles: Article 27 concerning the permissibility of postponing the execution of a custodial sentence; Article 29 and Article 71 paragraph 2 concerning punishment for attempt; Article 74/2 concerning the criminal liability of natural and legal persons; Article 340 concerning exculpatory excuse and its replacement with a mitigating excuse after the amendment; Article 342 concerning justified killing in defense of self, property, or honor ("legitimate defense - the excellent case"), which now includes entering or attempting to enter a residence day or night; Article 282 concerning the crime of adultery by husband and wife; Article 283 concerning the evidence for the crime of adultery; and Article 285 concerning the crime of incest.

The Penal Code is a set of substantive rules that define crimes, penalties, and precautionary measures prescribed for these crimes. These substantive rules consist of two types: the first includes general provisions that apply to all various crimes and penalties. The second type includes specific rules for each crime individually, its aggravating or mitigating circumstances, and its prescribed penalty. The rules of the Penal Code are characterized by their punitive and prohibitive nature, which gives it a special identity that distinguishes it from other branches of public and private law.

The rules of the General Section of the Penal Code are characterized by stability and consistency, as they are general and cover all crimes, their penalties, and their precautionary measures. Nevertheless, they are subject to amendment in response to changes affecting states and societies in the era of globalization, the internet, and modern technology.

The General Section of the Penal Code includes legal rules related to crimes, their elements, criminal liability, impediments to liability and punishment, legal excuses, circumstances of the crime, grounds for justification, attempt, forms of criminal intent, and participation in the crime and its forms.
