Adonis is a Syrian poet, born in 1930 in the village of Qassabin, Syria. He adopted the name Adonis, after the Phoenician myth, breaking with traditional Arab naming conventions in 1948. With Yusuf al-Khal, he founded the magazine 'Shi'r' (Poetry) in 1975. He then established the magazine 'Mawaqif' between 1969 and 1994. He has been a visiting professor at universities and research centers in France, Switzerland, the United States, and Germany. He has received numerous international awards and honors, and his works have been translated into many languages. His publications with Dar al-Saqi include: "The Static and the Changing," "The Divan of Arabic Prose," "The Divan of Arabic Poetry," and "The Black Ocean."
