Many sources have not reached us; therefore, researchers have made several attempts to reconstruct them, relying on the quotations and citations scattered in the works of later authors taken from those sources. This study confirms that reconstructing lost sources does not merely mean collecting quotations and citations. It demonstrates, by examining three later sources, that these quotations might be indirect, even if they appear to be direct. It also highlights how transmitted texts can change almost completely from their original form. The study concludes that if we want to reconstruct a lost source, we must carefully examine the sources that have preserved quotations and citations from it, be patient and deliberate in our examination, and pause to consider their intended purpose, methodology, and the terminology of narration they use.
