For decades, Ocalanism (or Apoism, as its supporters prefer to call it) has been a key player in the political, ideological, and military conflicts across the countries where the Kurdish people reside. Some have dismissed the phenomenon as leftist infantilism, reduced it to a separatist movement, or attempted to frame it solely as a terrorist organization. However, over more than forty years of armed struggle, political and ideological revisions, and an ability to polarize, this movement has become a formidable factor in the regional equation. It can no longer be oversimplified or considered a temporary phenomenon to be met with denial or brute force. It is unfortunate that the Arabic-speaking public has seldom followed the profound transformations Ocalanism has undergone, in an era where cultural desertification, sectarian extremism, and intellectual decline have converged, and violence has become the highest common denominator between the oppressor and the oppressed. This book attempts to examine the Ocalanist situation without bias or prejudice, and without conflating the legitimate rights of a people with the political programs and practices of a movement that defends these rights.
