From the novel:
My heart descends from clouds of calm, from the stillness of the night that awakens pain in the throes of ecstasy... And why this joy, so full of the place's fragrance? In every waking moment, I touch my head, play with the flowing locks of my hair, and find threads that capture the sun, leaving it to flirt with its last rays... I stand. I court the mirror anew to preserve my stature as my memory does with things, seeing in its stations desolation and barrenness, and I recall a magic in a memory that sometimes plays with the laziness of waves... But I know well: the centers of thought in the minds of those floating around it have become overcast with clouds... Surely, it is impossible to put an end to thinking... Everyone begins to pray and prostrate before God... they see Him with their own eyes and remember all that is beautiful. There, in my favorite place, I meet the one who grants me language, to speak, to embrace myself and what stirs within me. It is he who pulls me from the spiral of pain. With him, I remember my presence as I speak of the beautiful, the one who drew the pulse of my life on the maps of my heart. I was created from the womb of Eve... I wonder: is a companion equal to a lover, a prophet, or a jinn... in such a place of revelation?!
