Nostalgia for Superstition: Chapters on Pseudoscience

Superstition dominates many human interactions, infiltrating not only poor, undereducated communities but also extending into circles that appear sophisticated, educated, and civilized. Through all educational and media channels, we are daily exposed to pseudoscience and new superstitions whose dazzling allure makes them easy to believe and act upon. This book, "Nostalgia for Superstition," enables us to distinguish between science and pseudoscience by presenting the contributions of thinkers and philosophers of science such as Thomas Gilovich, Karl Popper, and John Casti. The author considers it a sequel to his book "Logical Fallacies," which discussed related topics.

An excellent and valuable book. The author considers it a continuation of his book "Logical Fallacies," and I find it more important than the latter. It discusses "pseudoscience," its proponents, and its appeal, or traps. It is an attempt to strengthen the mind's immunity against "intellectual falsehoods," from which few people, including scientists, have escaped. In the chapters of this book, the author relies on summarizing books and articles from a group of the best thinkers and philosophers of science. However, the author (Adel Mostafa), as in most of his books, falls into the error of repeating phrases and ideas, although he apologizes for this in the introduction, justifying it by the nature of the book's material being a summary of books and articles with shared themes. Yet, one hopes that someone with Dr. Adel Mostafa's beautiful style and precise phrasing would rephrase his books to be more beautiful and complete. The author's culture is reflected here in the richness of his material and the density and branching of its ideas within the context of the topic. This makes his books a treasure of ideas worthy of contemplation, reflection, and further exploration.
