The science of the abrogating and abrogated in Hadith (Nasikh al-Hadith wa Mansukhuhu) is a science of high esteem and great importance. A mujtahid's ijtihad (independent legal reasoning) is incomplete without knowledge of it, and a mufti cannot issue fatwas without a solid grasp of it. Nevertheless, it is a difficult and challenging field that jurists and scholars of Hadith in the past found arduous to navigate, often admitting their inability and hesitation when faced with it.
