I rejected the worship of God because I was engrossed in worshipping myself, fascinated by the flicker of light that began to gleam in my mind with the opening of consciousness and the beginning of awakening from the cradle of childhood. This psychological state was behind the controversial scene that repeated every day... The principles of logic also eluded me as I dealt with logic, and I did not realize that I was contradicting myself by acknowledging the Creator and then asking, 'Who created the Creator?' thereby making Him a creature at the very moment I called Him a Creator, which is sophistry itself. Furthermore, the argument for a first cause of existence necessitates that this cause be self-existent, not dependent or in need of another to exist. For a cause to need a cause makes it just one link in the chain of causality, not a first cause. These are the dimensions of the philosophical issue that led Aristotle to posit a first cause and a prime mover of existence. These dimensions were not clear in my mind at that time. I had not yet known who Aristotle was, nor what the first laws of logic and debate were. It took thirty years of immersion in books, thousands of nights of solitude, contemplation, dialogue with the self, reconsideration, and then reconsidering the reconsideration... then turning the thought over on every side to traverse the thorny path from God and man to the mystery of life, to the mystery of death, to what I write today of words on the path of certainty. It was not easy.
