The greatest blessing that Allah Almighty has bestowed upon His servants is that He sent among them a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom. Allah specifically chose for his companionship noble masters, who were most deserving and worthy of it. They undertook the preservation of this religion, its conveyance, and its spread to all regions, and were succeeded by pious scholars and pure jurists. At their forefront were the four great mujtahid imams, may Allah be pleased with them, who served the religion with the greatest service. Their students, the imams, followed in their footsteps in serving these four schools of thought, by editing, refining, and perfecting them, taking great care and sparing no expense.
Among these eminent imams was Imam Abu Ja'far Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Salama al-Tahawi, the renowned author of many works, born in 229 AH and died in 321 AH. In the school of Imam Abu Hanifa and his companions, he authored the book 'Mukhtasar al-Tahawi' (The Abridgement of al-Tahawi), which is considered one of the most important and oldest accredited and relied-upon texts in the school of thought.
