Here I return once again to Jacques Derrida to present to the Arab reader the first translation of one of his most important books, "Monolingualism of the Other." It is a book in which Derrida moves from the realms of language with its present burdens and absent significations to the search for the principles of identity with its sometimes unique names and at other times its multifaceted games. My return to Derrida here carries nothing of the 'return' but its meaning; it is not a deconstructive or structuralist return. Rather, it is a return aimed at putting Derrida to the test of 'hermeneutic research,' attempting to bring him into the kingdom of meaning, reference, and significance, and thereby extracting him from the hypostasis of a language searching for its harmony within a tiring, exhausting verbal strangeness that almost turns man into a symbol among its many symbolized items. (From the translator's introduction)
