This book keeps pace with the technological and printing developments in the field of press direction. It provides students of journalism in general, and direction in particular, with the necessary practical and scientific background on modern press direction, its principles, and specific vocabulary. It aims to introduce these concepts and address the growing need to understand these terms and how to handle them amidst the evolution of printed communication and the emergence of various desktop publishing programs.
The book seeks to enhance the comprehension of certain directorial details and terms, especially the technical ones, within a contemporary, practical framework. It focuses on the stages of direction, its nature as an editorial process through form, the dialectical relationship between form and content, and everything related to the execution of these stages using modern tools and methods, based on theoretical scientific principles and practical applications that align with current developments.
The book is divided into seven chapters. Chapter One explains the concept, function, and limitations of direction, and defines the types of typographic elements and related decisions. Chapter Two details the stages of press direction and all related terms, technical and scientific foundations, publishing technology used in each stage, its mechanisms, the role of the editorial secretariat, the tasks of the editorial board, and the types of directives in press institutions related to the direction process. Chapter Three addresses the principles of headline direction, its forms, types, and functions as a fundamental anchor in the direction process, and how to use them on the newspaper's front page and the magazine's cover, and their various positions within the text. Chapter Four explains the most prominent modern principles and practical steps for directing the newspaper's front page and magazine cover, their sections, and the rules for distributing typographic elements on each, considering their importance and specificity, and presents models and forms for magazine cover and page direction. Chapter Five provides an explanation of the methods for directing press photos, their types, and the steps for their directorial treatment, given their importance and functions. It also covers photo captions, sources, the role of color in their direction, and the modern digital processing they undergo. Chapter Six explains the direction of advertisements and internal editorial content in newspapers and magazines, clarifying the approved methods and main rules for advertisement direction, as well as the nature of directing investigative reports, religion pages, economy and finance pages, sports pages, and variety pages, and the methods for directing editorial material in general. The seventh and final chapter reviews the most prominent schools of press direction—traditional, moderate, modern, and post-modern—and clarifies the characteristics of the different doctrines that follow each school or directorial style.
We hope that specialized readers, journalism and media students, and professionals in the field of press direction will find that the content of this book, which combines theoretical foundations with practical and applied aspects, meets a fundamental need. Assistance was sought from specialists in technical direction departments and printing press management at both "Al-Ghad" and "Ad-Dustour" newspapers to illuminate these aspects.
