This book is a study of Arabic literature in the modern era, addressing the poetry movement from the second half of the nineteenth century to the present day. This period begins with the renaissance poetry of al-Baroudi and his disciples, passes through the romantic poetry movement, and ends with the modernist poetry of al-Sayyab, Nazik al-Malaika, and their peers in Egypt, Iraq, the Levant, and to some extent, Tunisia, Sudan, and the Arabian Peninsula. Undoubtedly, modern Arabic literature is a vast and expansive field, much like any world literature. In it, we find both classical and modern poetry, with many forms existing within modern poetry. Poetry in this era also has multiple trends and schools, which presents significant challenges for researchers tracking its course closely. As I began writing and organizing these sections and chapters, I considered the curriculum of a university student preparing for a degree in Arabic Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arts, aided by my years of teaching experience at both the secondary and university levels.

This study aims to keep pace with modern Arabic poetry and to study its trends and movements. I have focused on the prominent poets who represent these trends and movements, examining the life of each poet and analyzing aspects of their poetic contributions. My approach was historical in outlining the poets' lives and analytical in studying their poetry, attempting to extract the constituent elements of their work on one hand, and to study the levels of their art on the other, drawing inspiration from modern stylistics.

I have structured this book into three parts. The first chapter of the first part is dedicated to the literary renaissance: its factors and manifestations. The second chapter sheds light on the revival movement in Egypt, with the remaining chapters highlighting the renaissance of literature in other Arab countries, particularly Iraq and the Levant. In the second part, I address romanticism in Arabic poetry, highlighting its various trends and movements, starting from the Mahjar (diaspora) poetry, the Diwan group, the Apollo group, romanticism in other Arab countries, and romanticism in women's poetry, concluding with a discussion of content and structure in romantic poetry. The third part is dedicated to the trend of national and patriotic liberation in modern poetry, discussing Palestinian resistance poetry. I have made an effort to study modernist poetry: its origins, prominent figures, and artistic structure. I concluded the book with an appendix of selected poems by major Arab poets.

Whatever the case, we do not claim that this book has encompassed all of modern Arabic poetry; rather, it has covered parts of it. This body of poetry requires a massive book composed of several volumes, to be undertaken by committees of researchers and professors from sister Arab countries.
