The approach governing this book is based on the following aspects:

  • First: Wars are fought and won by soldiers. Therefore, attention must be directed to the soldier in terms of their physical and psychological fitness, and proper training in specializations that suit their abilities, intelligence, and personality traits to achieve the highest efficiency.
  • Second: These heroic warriors are human beings above all else. Their basic needs for food, drink, and rest must be met, and their humanity respected so they can perform their duties.
  • Third: The men who bear arms and fight wars must live up to the "honor of soldiery" and the "honor of bearing arms." Military service and bearing arms for God and country is a distinction unparalleled by any other. Their weapons must serve their nation and confront its enemies.
  • Fourth: The weapon a soldier carries is a trust, as nations have paid a high price for it and entrusted it to their sons. It is fitting and proper for them to safeguard this trust.
  • Fifth: The soldier is the ideal example of a good citizen. They should know that the army they belong to is a military institution whose mission is to defend the homeland and its interests. This institution's primary concern is preparing for combat in peacetime and engaging in it during war. This military institution is entirely dedicated to this purpose, not involving itself in political conflicts, not interfering in them, and not belonging to any political party. Adherence to the honor of soldiery is the creed of the military institution and its valiant soldiers.
  • Sixth: The honor of bearing arms for God and country is a crown upon the heads of soldiers. A soldier should never part with their weapon under any circumstances and should use it wisely, not to kill a prisoner or an unarmed person, and to respect the humanity of their enemies to rise above the savage instincts of some humans.
  • Seventh: One of the manifestations of a soldier's commitment to the "honor of the military" is to obey their superiors, both senior and junior, and to treat their comrades-in-arms with the utmost cooperation, altruism, and brotherhood.

This book is intended for the general reader, but it is specifically aimed at the following categories of students:

  • First: Psychology Specialists: Military psychology is a fundamental part of the information base for a psychology specialist. In this book, the specialist will find important and useful information closely related to other branches of psychology, such as general psychology, social psychology, and experimental psychology.
  • Second: Military Science Specialists: A comprehensive understanding of psychology in general, and military psychology in particular, is essential for military science specialists. It introduces them to many psychological aspects of dealing with soldiers and the factors affecting their performance in theaters of operation.
  • Third: Political Science Specialists: A grasp of military psychology is necessary for political science specialists because war—although a military affair—is inextricably linked to politics. Indeed, war is an integral part of politics, and the decision to "wage war" is primarily a political one.

In conclusion of this rather lengthy introduction, I extend my sincere thanks to my family, my wife, and my children, who provided me with quiet time—which they needed most—to prepare the scholarly material for this book. I also extend my sincere thanks to Professor Azza Al-Harfa, who reviewed the book linguistically. My sincere thanks and appreciation also go to Mr. Amr Bakr, the unsung hero who helped me obtain the important and essential references for this book.
