This book is the result of a personal experience lived by Dostoevsky, as it talks about what he himself endured in prison, though he attributes the memoirs to a man named Alexander Goryanchikov. It describes feelings of lost freedom and living among murderers and thieves who harbor great hostility towards him due to his belonging to the upper class that oppresses the people. However, Dostoevsky does not succumb to pessimism. Over time, he begins to distinguish between the good and the wicked, finding among the prisoners those whose crimes can be understood and even excused from a moral standpoint. He offers a powerful depiction of prison life, full of misery, yet also rich human interactions, mutual benefits, trade, and unimaginable things. Dostoevsky criticizes the prison system, saying, 'We must recognize the truth: these men possess remarkable treasures... perhaps among our people, they are the most talented and gifted, yet their excellent faculties have perished irretrievably. Who is to blame?' As usual, Dostoevsky delves into the profound depths of human nature, exploring what the intellect does not control nor comprehend. He studies the prisoner's psyche in his hardness and his readiness to offer what he owns for a gesture of kindness and human affection. He also examines the psyche of the executioner, who, despite being among the best people, becomes hardened by habit, becoming a savage beast.
