"Meditations"... 'Life is a constant struggle and a place of exile, and the only glory that remains is obscurity. What then can guide us on our way? One thing... and one thing only: Philosophy.'
Marcus Aurelius's "Meditations" is akin to a journal in which he recorded his reflections, perhaps in the midst of battles, on mountains, or deep in forests, and sometimes in his magnificent palace. The key is that these are reflections written without the intention of a deep lesson or eloquent discourse. Nevertheless, one is astonished by the numerous references to classic books and works in Greek and Latin literature. It is not limited to previous Stoics but includes all philosophical schools and literary doctrines of the Greeks and Romans. This diversity in Aurelius's sources clearly indicates the depth of his culture and the breadth of his knowledge.
The translation presented here is by an assiduous student of philosophy and a connoisseur of literature. He is a translator who loves the material he translates and lives the principles he explains. Therefore, his style is palatable. Although he translates the Greek text from English, he has not lost much of the spirit of the original text, a translation that was reviewed against the Greek text of Meditations by Dr. Ahmed Othman. The translator has succeeded in creating an engaging formula for the Stoic philosopher's ideas, and we are fully confident that the Arab reader will find great pleasure and tangible benefit in reading this text, in which we can find ample solace for what we endure in our days.
