Ali Shariati was deeply engaged in the fields of politics, sociology, and religion. Socially ideologized religion formed a fundamental element of his intellectual project, which he presented from a perspective distinct from traditional Shiite religious trends. This was evident in his reading of religious texts, his interpretation of Islamic history, and his analysis of the prevailing political and social reality of his time.

Shariati's writings are characterized by a rejection of the sanctification of symbols, a critique of populist faith, sharp criticism of some within the religious establishment, and a constant questioning of their motives and practices. He proposed a political system for governance that originates from religion but does not end there; instead, it positions religion as one important source among many derived from human historical experience, chief among them being Marxism, which heavily influenced his intellectual framework. All of this indicates that we are presented with a renewed and different reading of Islam and Shi'ism.
