Marwan bin Muhammad, also known as Marwan the Donkey or Marwan al-Ja'di referring to his tutor Ja'd ibn Dirham, was the last Umayyad caliph in Damascus. He took over the caliphate from Ibrahim ibn al-Walid, his cousin's grandson, who relinquished it to him. Marwan was relentless in fighting the Kharijites. His endurance in battle was exemplified by the saying, 'More patient in war than a donkey.'
