Madame Bovary is the story of an unfaithful wife, but it is also a revealing study of human life and an attack on the meaningless rules and attitudes of middle-class society. The book took Flaubert five years to write and finally appeared in installments in the Revue de Paris in 1856. Flaubert's attention to detail in his powerful depiction of the psychology and actions of ordinary people led many to call Madame Bovary a great work of realism. However, the French government thought differently, and the author was brought to court for what it called the book's immorality, and Flaubert was nearly sent to prison for writing the novel.
