Lisan al-Arab: It is one of the most comprehensive and largest dictionaries of the Arabic language, and is considered the most extensive linguistic and literary encyclopedia due to the abundance of its scholarly material, its thoroughness, and its inclusion of the vast majority of Arabic vocabulary. It is also one of the richest dictionaries in terms of textual evidence (shawahid).

Its author, Ibn Manzur (d. 711 AH), compiled the material for this book from five main sources:

• Tahdhib al-Lughah by al-Azhari
• Al-Muhkam wa al-Muhit al-A'zam by Ibn Sidah
• Taj al-Lughah wa Sihah al-Arabiyya by al-Jawhari
• Hawashi Ibn Barri 'ala Sihah al-Jawhari
• Al-Nihayah fi Gharib al-Hadith wa al-Athar by Izz al-Din Ibn al-Athir.
