Over time, the importance of statistics has grown, especially in recent years, where it has occupied a prominent place among other sciences. To understand the scientific methods and technical tools for collecting, tabulating, displaying, analyzing, and interpreting statistical data, it is essential to provide the reader with a brief overview of life statistics through a simplified study of the basic principles of descriptive and biostatistics. To this end, the first chapter of this book covers how to collect, organize, and summarize statistical data using both graphical and tabular presentation methods.
Given the importance of establishing concepts related to the classification of variables and their measurement scales, which benefit researchers and students in various fields, an adequate overview of this topic is provided at the beginning of this chapter. The second section of this chapter also discusses the most important descriptive statistical measures of a computational and numerical nature, by analyzing data distribution and its related aspects, namely measures of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, and kurtosis.
To enrich the content of this book and allow the reader to explore some terms mentioned in the syllabus in detail, the topic of probability and probability distributions has been added in the third section of this chapter. The fourth section includes a simplified and concise study of sampling theory, covering the meaning of a sample, reasons for its selection, the most important types of sampling methods, potential errors, and estimating sample size for means.
Given the importance of studying and analyzing data related to life events, and to enable professionals in public or community health to contribute effectively to developing and modernizing health programs, as well as in development, housing, education, and social security plans, the second chapter of this book covers the most crucial aspects of studying these events. This includes general and specific vital statistics related to mortality, fertility, morbidity, and life tables.
As we place this book in the hands of our dear reader, we hope it will be a valuable resource, especially for those in statistical roles within various health institutions or departments.
