This book, 'Liberating Islamic Consciousness', is published just a few months after the passing of Arkoun. He did not get the chance to see it, although he was eagerly awaiting it after giving the order for its publication by Dar Al-Talia. Mohammed Arkoun spent his entire life deconstructing religious closures and dogmatic ideological fences. If there is one title that expresses his personality and thought, it is the title of this very book: 'Liberating Islamic Consciousness: Towards an Exit from Closed Dogmatic Enclosures'. In reality, exiting closed traditional enclosures represents the core of Arkoun's thought and is perfectly synonymous with the other major title: 'Towards a Critique of Traditional Theological Islamic Reason', even though fanatical closure is not exclusive to one religion but exists in all others. The reader will find in this important book a clear embodiment of Arkoun's intellectual project aimed at extricating us from our narrow sectarian and doctrinal bigotries that tear us apart and separate us. It goes without saying that the book comes at the right time, a time when our Arab world is witnessing the most dangerous project of sectarian, ethnic, and doctrinal division. Thus, the contemporary thinker of Islam delivered his great lesson to us and then departed.
