"... Islamic thought is a dynamic and open thought, which allows thinkers to express their opinions with freedom, commitment, and respect for the other's opinion, away from fanaticism, dogmatism, isolation, and aggression. If these lectures can stimulate a constructive discussion on issues of modern and contemporary Arab and Islamic thought, they will have achieved the primary goal of their writing... for someone to add to them, making this book a modest contribution to an active intellectual movement that has existed, and still exists, throughout the Arab and Islamic world." (The Author)
Professor Dr. Hisham Nashabeh was born in Tripoli, Lebanon in 1931. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Political Science from the American University of Beirut, and his master's and doctorate in Islamic Studies from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, under the supervision of Professor Hamilton Gibb at Harvard University. He worked in the Maqasid Philanthropic Islamic Association as a teacher, director, dean, and president of its university, and he is still a member of the association's board of trustees. He represented Lebanon on the Executive Board of UNESCO in Paris and chaired its Program and Budget Committee (1998–2002), the Executive Board of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) (2002–2006), as well as the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Palestine Studies in Beirut (1984–2012).
