The sight of a garden evokes a range of emotions, which serve as a personal measure of its beauty or ugliness. This perception varies from one individual to another based on personal taste and ideals of beauty. One person might favor a particular plant or scene because it triggers cherished memories; the effect of that plant or view stems not from its inherent qualities but from its connection to their imagination. Thus, a single landscape might instill a sense of comfort and tranquility in one person, while causing anxiety and unease in another.
The success of garden landscaping depends on its impact on visitors with their diverse preferences. The more varied the feelings evoked in different, separate parts of the garden, the more spacious it feels. It is as if one transitions from a world of tranquility in a secluded spot—with a green lawn or a calm lake surrounded by irregular clusters of trees and shrubs—to a world of activity in another area designated for children's play, complete with a continuously flowing fountain.
Therefore, the designer must aim to inspire feelings of joy and delight in some parts of the garden, and calm and serenity in others.
