Kierkegaard was primarily known as a pioneer of existentialist thought, which flourished particularly in the mid-20th century. However, what many do not know is that Kierkegaard's thought and philosophy have contemporary significance, especially since subsequent scientific developments in the 20th and our current century have undermined much of the image of 'reason' and 'science' as understood in the 19th century. The wellspring of Kierkegaard's ideas is much broader than what the existentialists took from him. His importance is not limited to various aspects of human thought such as theology (with figures like Karl Barth, Emil Brunner, Rudolf Bultmann), psychology (he is considered a pioneer of Christian psychology and existential psychology), and literature (through his influence on prominent writers like Auden, Kafka, Rilke, Borges, Camus, and Hermann Hesse). Furthermore, many prominent philosophers, such as Wittgenstein and Derrida, or contemporary philosophers in our current century like Badiou and Žižek, have engaged with, discussed, and utilized his ideas, in addition to his influence on what has come to be known as 'material theology' or 'non-metaphysical theology'.
