Jamharat Ash'ar al-Arab is a major wellspring of Arabic literature and a vast, rich record of the heritage, life, days, and character of the Arabs. It presents a collection of poems from Arabs of the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic) and Islamic eras, in whose tongues the Qur'an was revealed, from whose words the Arabic language was derived, and from whose poetry evidence for the meanings of Hadith and the Qur'an was drawn. Literature and wisdom are attributed to them. This record encompasses all the themes and experiences that depict the Arab psyche, environment, society, and customs. We find sweet praise that moves the praised, pride and honor, and among the poets, the joyful and serene, the bereaved and mournful with sleepless, tearful eyes, and the impassioned lover reflecting the echo of a wounded heart... Poetry is the 'Diwan of the Arabs,' through which genealogies were preserved and great deeds were known. This book is a broad section of this Diwan, containing texts considered masterpieces of Arabic poetry from both the Jahiliyyah and Islamic periods.
