Jamharat Ash'ar al-Arab - al-Arqam is a source from the wellsprings of Arabic literature and a vast, rich record of the Arabs' heritage, life, history, and character. It presents an anthology of poetry from the pre-Islamic (Jahiliyyah) and Islamic eras, from the people in whose tongue the Quran was revealed, from whose words the Arabic language was derived, whose poems are used as evidence in the meanings of Hadith and the Quran, and to whom literature and wisdom are attributed. This record contains all the themes and experiences that can portray the Arab psyche, environment, society, and customs. We find sweet praise that delights the praised, as well as pride and honor. We find poets who are joyful and content, and others who are mournful, bereaved, sleepless, and tearful, and the infatuated lover who reflects the echo of his wounded heart... Poetry is the 'Diwan of the Arabs'; through it, genealogies were preserved and great deeds were known. This book is but a broad section of this Diwan, containing texts considered among the masterpieces of Arabic poetry from the pre-Islamic and Islamic periods.
