Numerous articles and scientific and journalistic contributions have been penned about the origin of the word 'Iraq', its meanings, and how this name evolved in ancient times and the distant past. This linguistic issue has always been a focal point of interest. However, researchers seldom give appropriate attention to another equally important topic: what are the actual geographical boundaries of this term? In this book, we present what the Arab Islamic geographical literature has said from the beginning of Islamic civilization more than 1,200 years ago until the 14th century. We believe that this approach is the best method to understand the boundaries of the term Iraq and shed light, as much as possible, on its origin and to provide an objective analysis of the circumstances that led to the emergence of this name. The authors we present in this book knew 'Iraq' as it originally was and recognized it without needing the aspirations, whims, and experiences of later generations after many centuries.
