Individuals with special needs are a group present in every society, referred to by various terms such as exceptional individuals. The umbrella of special needs includes individuals who deviate significantly in their mental, emotional, linguistic, motor, and sensory development from average individuals. The concept of special needs encompasses the following categories: the gifted, and those with intellectual, hearing, visual, and motor disabilities, as well as those with communication disorders, behavioral and emotional disturbances, and learning disabilities. These groups constitute a significant percentage in every society, with their prevalence estimated to be no less than 3% and potentially as high as 10%, noting that these percentages vary depending on the type of disability and the societies in which the studies were conducted.

Individuals with special needs require specialized educational programs to help them develop their abilities to the fullest extent of their potential. These programs also work on fostering their independence to become productive members of their community by providing training and employment opportunities, and protecting their rights through legislation that ensures their equality with ordinary individuals in society.

This book comes as a result of the growing interest in individuals with special needs in the Arab world, especially with the increase in disability cases due to the noticeable spread of consanguineous marriages in Arab societies, the lack of mandatory pre-marital medical examinations, as well as insufficient attention to maternal health and the general decline in health services in some Arab communities.
