"There is no need for social work if the community does not feel it": This slogan, launched by Professor Dr. Mohamed El-Zarif Saad, Professor of Community Service at the Faculty of Social Work, Helwan University, emphasizes a dual objective. The first is the necessity for the profession to respond to the continuous issues of society, and the second is to increase community support and recognition for the profession. Social work, as a profession, integrates and collaborates with other professions to contribute to increasing human welfare by satisfying needs and working to solve problems, thereby raising the quality of life and improving living standards for individuals, members of various groups, and citizens in society. Despite its recent emergence as a profession, social work has proven its importance in all fields of practice due to its early association with advocating for the poor and disenfranchised. To achieve its goals, it has focused on developing its core components, most importantly the preparation of the professional practitioner—the social worker—by providing a specialized knowledge framework. This framework includes knowledge related to primary methods (casework, group work, community organization) and auxiliary methods (research, social work administration, and social planning), in addition to knowledge developed with modern trends in social work. This book is presented in seven chapters, with the first chapter discussing the origin and development of the social work profession, addressing the circumstances of the emergence and evolution of social welfare and the social work profession in American society and some Arab countries.
