The world no longer faces a problem in producing goods and services; instead, the challenge now lies in responding to the needs and desires of consumers by delivering products at the right place, time, quality, with the right components, packaging, and price. Producers and marketers now base their decisions on scientific foundations, relying on scientific research results to develop these decisions and striving for economies of scale that save costs and increase profits. Consequently, national markets are no longer able to absorb what producers and marketers offer, leading them to look towards international markets as opportunities, challenges, and areas for achieving greater fame and profits.

This trend has been aided by rapid technological developments in various fields of production and marketing, especially in data collection, analysis, interpretation, and the speed of internet communications. These rapid scientific advancements will continue in the future, creating new opportunities for producers, marketers, and qualified job seekers to enter global markets. They will also require a re-evaluation of many traditional methods in promotion, advertising, finance, storage, distribution, and pricing strategies, as well as the nature of various activities that have transcended political borders thanks to scientific and technological progress, overcoming the protectionist measures governments used to take to hinder these developments.

Furthermore, international relations and their responsibilities are no longer bilateral or regional. The responsibility for scientific progress, environmental protection, and global warming issues has become global, with the United Nations intervening through its specialized organizations. The international environment is changing rapidly, affecting companies, individuals, and policymakers. This demands international marketing activities practiced in new international markets for everyone, especially for marketers who must adapt their activities to these changes and avoid conflict with the prevailing political, cultural, legal, economic, and social realities in those markets, so that trade becomes a source of growth, profit, satisfaction of needs and desires, and improvement of living standards.

The origins of this book were lectures delivered to students of the Marketing Department at Al-Rafidain University College in Baghdad, covering topics approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in 1993, the first year this department was established and the only one in Iraqi universities. These lectures were updated whenever new sources became available, and this continued throughout the years of sanctions on Iraq. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, after participating in scientific conferences in and outside Iraq, it became possible to access some modern sources on international marketing. After joining Isra University in Amman, Jordan, many modern resources became available to me in the university library and other universities, which facilitated updating some topics and adding new sections that had not been covered before, until the book was finalized in its current form.

The book consists of fourteen chapters. The first chapter deals with the emergence and development of international marketing, and trade theories are presented in the second chapter. Chapters three and four cover the international marketing environment and its variables. Due to the rapid developments in the international environment, chapter five presents the two most important groups of variables: technological and international competition variables. Chapter six covers how producers and marketers can base their decisions on scientific foundations, utilizing scientific developments, especially the use of computers and the internet for data collection and analysis to reach sound conclusions in light of marketing research results and new information systems in this field. Chapters seven and eight benefit from information systems and research results to analyze markets, leading to the selection of the most suitable market(s) for the international marketer according to specific quantitative and qualitative criteria. Once these foundations are available to the marketer, chapters nine, ten, and eleven detail the strategies that can be adopted in the areas of product, pricing, sales conditions, and payment for exported goods. Since a product cannot sell itself, it must be promoted and advertised in the target markets using appropriate methods, which are discussed in chapter twelve. Services have become a major component of international trade, and their sector holds a significant position in the economies of many countries worldwide. A service is no longer just a complement to a product but is traded individually and/or complemented by a product. Due to the increasing and continuous importance of services internationally, chapter thirteen is dedicated to presenting them in a manner befitting their importance in international marketing. As we live today in a rapidly changing world in various fields related to international relations, including trade relations, chapter fourteen is dedicated to covering this topic in a way that suits the importance and seriousness of its developments for the decision-maker. Each chapter concludes with a focused summary, a set of review questions, and a list of references, especially modern ones, used in addressing the topics.
