Many specialists compare the process of information systems analysis and design to the work of an architect. Just as an architect uses architectural design to summarize a house's requirements, information systems experts have construction methods to represent and design system requirements in a similar fashion. The scale of an information system project can range from an individual project for a single user to a system used by thousands of individuals in large organizations. This large scale of information systems projects has led to the emergence of many theoretical and operational constraints faced by system design experts, making the scope and complexity of these projects far greater than the capabilities of a single designer or even a single team.
Therefore, building a large and effective information system correctly requires adopting appropriate systematic approaches that allow for breaking down a complex problem into several less complex ones, thus providing an opportunity for multiple system-building experts to work together on the project. The reality is that as the system's size and complexity increase, so does the number of parties involved in its design and construction. An information systems project may require the participation of all parties related to the system's applications, alongside design and construction experts.
A set of tools has been developed to document the requirements for designing and building an information system (system requirements, its functional characteristics, design alternatives, etc.), termed "Structured Techniques." These techniques are used in all stages of the system's analysis, design, and construction process. Additionally, these techniques have been integrated into a larger framework called the "System Development Methodology." This methodology is essentially a framework of guidelines, tools, and methods for managing the application of knowledge and skills to build the system. In addition to Structured Tools, this methodology describes who participates in the analysis, design, and construction processes, their roles, the construction phases, decision-making centers, and the forms and diagrams used to document the system.
This book is designed to provide students with such a knowledge base, aiming to help them become end-users who can propose and participate in the design, construction, and development of information systems. Within this vision, the book covers the stages of information systems analysis and design within the system life cycle framework.
The book consists of nine chapters: The first chapter discusses the concept of information systems analysis and design, its dimensions, and the golden rules to be followed. The second chapter focuses on planning for information systems activities, explaining the concept and dimensions of planning, approaches to planning, system development methodologies, tools, and techniques, as well as evaluating and selecting information system projects. The third chapter deals with the feasibility study of information systems. Chapter four analyzes the current information system by focusing on its five basic dimensions. Chapter five focuses on diagnosing and addressing problems in the current system. Chapter six prepares the specifications for the proposed new information system. Chapter seven covers the mechanism for designing the new system. Chapter eight reviews the process of testing and implementing the new system. Finally, chapter nine addresses post-implementation efforts, including system evaluation and maintenance.
