I often state, after a challenging experience in Lebanese politics, that we have never acted as a unified people, but rather as tribes, which today are known as sects. Lebanon comprises eighteen sects, making sectarianism a multifaceted weapon that harms the fragile nation. We've realized after long struggles that when faced with issues, personal problems often overshadow the greater cause. This sad truth, our tendency as Arabs to address personal issues over our larger causes, is a theme reflected throughout this book. Resistance defines this era and will continue to do so until all Arab lands are liberated. Two Arab states have already signed settlement agreements with the Zionist enemy, and others may follow due to international pressure and the inability of Arab regimes to confront aggression. Although a settlement might end the armed conflict, it will not cease the Arab-Israeli struggle, which can persist through resistance, even if peaceful. The focus remains on reclaiming national rights through available means and maintaining effective boycotts across all levels. The core of the national issue is the right of return for Palestinian refugees to their homes in all of historical Palestine, from the sea to the river, as preserved by UN Resolution 194.
