In the story, an officer guides an explorer who has arrived on a mysterious island to inspect an infernal torture machine. This officer is the last of a sadistic lineage, clinging to his machine, which the new commandant condemns and seeks to abolish. The condemned man is tied face down on its lower part, while the upper part moves to plow the victim's back with needles until death, after which his body is thrown into the pit filled with his blood beneath the machine.
