Ikhtilaf al-Hadith is a book that delves into the science of the noble Hadith, specializing in the divergence of hadiths. These are narrations that may appear to the reader or listener to have conflicting rulings on the same issue. In this book, Al-Shafi'i resolves these ambiguities, such as when one of the two hadiths or rulings is abrogated, there is a linguistic difference between them, or there is a preponderant factor for one ruling over another, whether in the chain of narration (isnad) or the text (matn). Al-Shafi'i also clarifies in this book the rulings he adopted in his school of thought (madhhab).
